So does anyone know the reason for the the wining noise? I was thinking it was caused by the reduction gear and not the motor. If true, would this be more of an annoyance than a serious eventual breakdown problem? I would think everyone would have some degree of this noise, correct?

thanks

No, the correctly set-up motors don't whine.

We need to set up a meeting where we can compare and let some that have had the change listen to the rest for judgement.
Mine makes some gear/motor noise. More at low speed lately. The low level howl at 45-50 mph seems to be less lately.

We have meetings all the time in SoCal, including tomorrow morning (21 Feb 2015):

I have driven many RAV4 EV's to listen to the motor.

I recently read somewhere on this forum about a recent motor redesign. Does anyone know the approximate motor# or VIN# where the design change might have phased in? Hopefully it's a positive sign that Tesla might be doing some failure analysis and corrective actions on the motor issues.

thanks

Anything redesigned went into replacement motors. Production for RAV4 EV stopped 28 Aug 2014, which means that the motors were produced sometime in summer 2014... about the same time as the redesigned motor.

Motor
S60 – 302 hp (In Oct-2014 this changed to 380 hp, it’s unclear if this is a change or correction)

Recently read an interesting article regarding Tesla motor issues

You may have already read this but if not here it is

Maybe in some cases we just need a cable tightened or a shim?

cheers

That's what Mr. Musk has to say to keep the stock from tanking. There may be a cable or shim problem, but they did redesign the motor.

My belief is a bearing / gear set issue.

Could it be that there were teething problems with the fancy ceramic bearings from SKF?
