New California Corridor Fast Chargers Installed

The Electrify America site off I-5 west of Bakersfield is now open. It is at the intersection of CA-43 and CA-119 about 1-2 miles off I-5. This closes the 118 mile DCFC gap between the ChargePoint Harris Ranch site and the ChargePoint Tejon Ranch site and reduces it to 90 miles. I am purposely ignoring the low power EVRUS CHAdeMO charger in Lost Hills because I would never plan a trip that depended on it. ChargePoint has another more useful site in Buttonwillow coming soon, but it's not open yet.

The CEC Chargepoint in Victoville just went live. Right next door to an existing EVgo, so it fills no gaps, but still one more option on the way to Las Vegas. Hopefully, they'll get the sites in Yermo and Baker up and running soon.

Looks like the I-15 corridor got some more options. The Chargepoint in Baker seems to have gone live. Still waiting on the chargers in Barstow/Yermo to make LA -> Vegas downright easy.

ChargePoint has opened a CEC funded site in Fresno. It's the last fast charging station in Fresno on CA-41 going north toward the next DCFC in Oakhurst and Yosemite beyond that.

This station has a pair of the new Express 250 units. It is listed in the ChargePoint app as 62.5kW.

ChargePoint has opened another CEC funded site in Auburn. Two Express 200 units and a dual head L2 station. It is just down the street from the existing EVgo DriveTheARC site.

ChargePoint sites in Placerville and Colfax have appeared in the ChargePoint app, but do not show status yet and don't show successful charges in Plugshare yet. The Colfax site has not been added to Plugshare yet.

The ChargePoint Dunnigan site is open, with a single 50kW unit across the street from the Electrify America site.

Strangely, the Dunnigan, Red Bluff, and Redding stations don't show up in the ChargePoint app. They have all reported a variety of problems in the last month or so. Anderson, just south of Redding, seems to be OK.

The Electrify America site on I-5 at Panoche Road is now open. It is almost equidistant between the fast chargers at Harris Ranch and Gustine / Santa Nella. EA is also under construction at Harris Ranch. The Panoche Shell site has a pair of 350kW stations and a pair of 150kW stations. One 150kW station has a 50kW CHAdeMO connector and a 150kW CCS connector. All other stations have redundant CCS connectors.

This is not really a corridor charging site and it's not CEC funded, but I thought it was noteworthy.

There is a relatively new site in Pomona, CA that has the first paired ChargePoint Express 250 installation that I know of. When ChargePoint announced the Express Plus charging system in January 2017, they announced this pairing capability. Each station contains a charging unit that can output 156A at 400VDC, limiting the amps if the voltage is higher, for a maximum power of 62.5kW. When the stations are paired and only one car is charging, all the available power can be directed to that vehicle, up to 312A and 125kW. The user interface on this installation indicates this capability, but none of the Plugshare checkins have validated it. I also don't have any information about what CHAdeMO limits are applied at this station. Presumably the best it could be is 200A since that is the best CHAdeMO cable on the market at the moment.

I got an e-mail from Electrify America at 7AM stating it was live. Another person commented three of the four pairs of chargers were functional. I hope one of those is the CHAdeMO connection.

With the Paso Robles site coming up, the gap to the next DC fast charger is reduced to less than 100 miles. (The chargers at the CALTRANS rest stop sites are not reliable enough to be useful.) The next site that seems to be under construction is in King City. The two Chargepoint stations are installed, but not live yet. They also aren't listed on the Chargepoint website yet. It took only 5 years to get a CHAdeMO charger between SLO and Salinas.

Yes, this site is live in the Electrify America app. It has two 350kW dual CCS stations and two 150kW stations with one dual CCS and one CCS + CHAdeMO. The CHAdeMO is always limited to 125A 50kW at EA sites even though they are equipped with 200A cables.

Agree. I believe the "Eric" that posted on 12/24 is the guy from News Coulomb. He does charger site reviews on his YouTube channel. In addition, there is still construction fencing in the photos from 12/24.

The ChargePoint DC fast chargers in King City are not live as of 12/26. I checked the site on my way home that night. There doesn't appear to be a transformer at the site yet. I was however able to get some charge at the 101 SB Camp Roberts site. It provided charge at 30kW and I was able to get up to 80% after about 40 minutes or so. The EA site in Paso Robles also worked well since I used it on my trip NB to the Bay Area. Traffic on the 101 last night was extremely heavy due to the closure of I-5 at the grapevine.

Finally, a L3 charger east of San Diego! A new Electrify America station is open in El Centro with 3x CCS and 1x Chademo connectors. It opened two days ago at 1414 Main St, 92243 at the Bank of America on Imperial and Main. Too bad it's 99 miles from my house, as I can't make it that far over the mountains. But it's a step in the right direction. There is also an Electrify America station in Yuma. Now if only the Golden Acorn Casino at Crestwood Summit would install L3 (or L2) I could make it to Az.

The bigger problem I see is getting somewhere interesting once you're in Arizona. It's 155 miles from Yuma to Buckeye where there is another EA fast charge site.

Speaking of Electrify America, looks like Bishop and Hesperia both went live. Bishop opens up more of the eastern Sierras, Yosemite, and Mammoth. Hesperia adds another option on the way to Vegas.

The EA station "Coming Soon" at the Walmart in El Cajon is 94 miles from the El Centro location. Doing a short L2 at the Viejas Casino would probably allow you to make it to El Centro from home.

The El Cajon Walmart is only 5 miles from my home, so not really worth the stop. The L2s at Viejas are only 3kW, unless I use a Tesla adapter then I can get almost 6kW from what I see on Plugshare. So it will take two hours to add just 15 miles of range at 3kW.

The bigger problem I see is getting somewhere interesting once you're in Arizona. It's 155 miles from Yuma to Buckeye where there is another EA fast charge site.

I have a vacation home on the Colorado River about 25 miles north of Yuma. I would really like to make the trip electric. Someday it will be routine.

You can make that 99 miles, but you would need some careful driving. 55mph in the truck lane until you hit the 4000 foot pass on Interstate 8, then as fast as you want all the way to El Centro (which is slightly below sea level).
