Found a dealer with 4 2013s in stock.

Wouldn't even have sales contact me after chating with the website people. It's like they don't want to sell them.

At the current sales rate of 62 in November 2013, the remaining 1340 of 2600 total Rav4 EVs will be sold out by the third week of August 2015.

NOTE 2: NEW FOR OCTOBER 2013: Lease bonus cash is only good for cars registered NEW in the state of California.

NOTE 3: July 2013, the lease discount cash was called "$15,400 TFS Subvention Lease Cash" Apparently, you get to pay sales tax on the discount!!! CAVEAT EMPTOR

********************

TYPICAL PURCHASE deals for NEW (not used) should look like this:

New Rav4 EV (not used)

$2000 - $4000 typical dealers discounts (the dealers are getting 2% "holdback", and the salesperson gets $1000 from Toyota USA and the sales manager get $500... don't worry about hammering them on a good deal)

$50,870 Retail MSRP (inc floor mats and destination, add $395 for "Blizzard Pearl" white paint)

($2,000-$4,000) Dealer Discount

($0) Toyota Cash with 0.0% interest for up to 60 months

$80 doc fee

$46,870 - $48,370 net cost plus tax and license. This is what you will pay in the dealership without tax or shipping from California to your out of state location

$5,000 sales tax and license plates in California. Your state may vary wildly

$500 - $1,000 shipping to you from the dealer, if applicable

Then:

($7,500) Fed Tax Credit (you will get this with your taxes with IRS form 8936)
($2,500) CA State Rebate (you will get this when you mail in a form)

CAVEAT EMPTOR: The dealer may try to sell you a low mileage "used" car so that they can claim and keep the government incentives.

********************************

LEASE DOWN-PAYMENTS:

I never recommend putting any money down an a lease to get a lower monthly lease payment. If the car is "totaled" as you drive it off the dealership's lot, all your down payment was just lost forever.

Click on this link to see a typical "zero down" Rav4 EV lease:

http://imageshack.us/a/img15/8920/bwt9.jpg

**************************

$7500 federal credit (IRS form 8936) applies to new cars only with purchase only, not on a lease. Toyota does not normally pass this credit to you on a lease - CHANGE FOR JULY 2013, they have begun offering you the $7500 fed tax credit in the lease. You have to actually have paid the IRS at least $7500 for this taxable year to get the full benefit of $7500 in a purchase. No carry-overs to next year.

$2,500 California state rebate for new cars only. Apply here for the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) which is funded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and administered statewide by the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE), 9325 Sky Park Court, #100, San Diego, CA 92123. Your state or province may also have incentives for out of state sales.

CAVEAT EMPTOR: known dealer scam is to sell you a "used" car and keep the tax credit. This is what can happen if you fall for the dealer's deception:

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8134#p8134

***************************

EXTENDED WARRANTY

I personally would not consider an extended warranty on a 36,000 mile lease. Your car will always be within the factory warranty period.

I do not normally buy the extended warranty at a dealer, but instead wait until I'm getting close to the end of the factory warranty period; for the Rav4 EV, that's 3 years / 36,000 miles. This way, you can actually shop for the best price amongst dealers anywhere in the USA.

Don't let the finance salesperson pressure you into a warranty (to increase their profit... called the "back-end" in the business, and that's exactly where you'll get it). If you do buy it, and subsequently cancel, it will take them many weeks or months to refund your money. In addition, they will prorate the months and miles on the car, even though it had a factory warranty concurrent with the extended warranty.

There is absolutely no reason to buy the warranty until you are absolutely sure you will go past the warranty period, and you know you have the best price. Then, it will likely exclude anything that would matter, like the battery!! By the way, the list price on that battery is $36,000.

***************************

MODEL YEAR DIFFERENCES

The only differences between a 2013 and 2012 model year is the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) has a "D" the replaces the "C" in the 8th digit from the right. The 2014 will likely have an E. You will find the VIN through the front window, looking from the outside on the driver's side, at the bottom.

I do not expect that there will be many 2013 model year cars still available. The 2014 model year will presumably be the last of the run after 2600 total are produced.

At the current sales rate of 167 in September 2013, the remaining 1493 Rav4 EVs to be sold will be sold out by the third week of June 2014.

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=418#p418

No, the Rav4 EV won't be extended or continued after 2600 are built.

***********************************************

CALIFORNIA CONTRACT CANCELLATION POLICY

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d05/vc11709_2.htm

California law does not provide for a "cooling-off" or other cancellation period for vehicle lease or purchase contracts. Therefore, you cannot later cancel such a contract simply because you change your mind, decide the vehicle costs too much, or wish you had acquired a different vehicle. After you sign a motor vehicle purchase or lease contract, it may only be canceled with the agreement of the seller or lessor or for legal cause, such as fraud.

************************

USED Rav4 EV 's:

If you buy used, even with almost zero miles on the car, you not only lose the tax credits and rebates, you may also lose the ability to "Lemon Law" the car should it come to that.

***************************

CALIFORNIA SALES TAX (purchase) or USE TAX (lease)

On an "in-state" purchase, you pay the applicable tax for your county/city. For an in state lease, you pay a "use tax" on the monthly payment. For out-of-state, you pay nothing to California with a proper Bill of Laden from a shipping company.

DO NOT TAKE DELIVERY IN CALIFORNIA

...unless you want to pay California taxes!!! You will pay applicable taxes in your out-of-state jurisdiction. There's a whole thread devoted to out-of-state purchases and leases.

**************************

OUT OF STATE SERVICE AND WARRANTY CLAIMS

Just know that an out-of-state dealer may be willing to service your Rav4 EV, but Toyota USA may not pay them for warranty claim reimbursements and the service payments for Toyota Care. I guarantee that will be the end of your service and warranty repairs at that dealer.

**************************

NOTE TO ALL OUT OF STATE BUYERS:

NEW FOR OCTOBER 2013: Lease bonus cash is only good for cars registered NEW in the state of California.

I recommend having a local California current Rav4 EV owner test drive your car at the dealer before shipping to you out of state. My particular car had excessive motor noise from new, so it will be easy to identify the same situation before the car is shipped to you.

***************************

IF YOUR CAR IS DELIVERED WITHOUT FUNCTIONING INTERIOR LIGHTS:

A pin is located in the engine bay passenger side fuse box to activate the lights. Inside that fuse box, there is a white "fuse" without any number and that is the "pin". Under the fuse cover, there is a location labeled "short". Put the "pin" into the "short" slot and interior function like light, garage door opener, external door handle switch will be activated.

***********************************

IF YOUR CAR IS DELIVERED WITH A REGISTRATION FOR AN OIL BURNING CAR INSTEAD OF AN ELECTRIC CAR:

Make sure your dealership ticked the correct box for "motive power" on the registration. If they incorrectly entered "gas", you'll need to get it corrected. In California, the DMV requests that the dealership complete Sections G & H of form "Reg 256". For section G, the sample response given was:

"Due to a clerical error on the Report of Sale, the motive power was entered as "gas (G)", when the actual motive power for this vehicle is "100% electric (E)". Please correct. No fraud intended."

The dealer then signs and dates Section H.

************************************

IF YOUR CAR'S UNLIMITED LEASE IS REJECTED BY TOYOTA FINANCIAL

EXPECT THE DEALER'S FINANCE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE PROBLEMS INPUTTING THE UNLIMITED MILEAGE LEASE IN THEIR COMPUTER. MAKE SURE YOUR LEASE DOCUMENTS ARE PROPERLY REFLECT AN UNLIMITED LEASE FOR WHEN TOYOTA FINANCIAL REJECTS IT MANY WEEKS LATER.

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8745#p8745

************************************

IF YOU WANT YOUR CAR DELIVERED WITH SPECIFIC SETTINGS:

You will likely want your dealer to set the reverse beeper to a single beep. I highly recommend writing this in the sales contract, particularly for an out of state sale. You will not like this distracting beeping in reverse. Also, I recommend setting the auto door locks to whatever setting you want prior to delivery (always unlocked, lock when in Drive, only unlock driver's door, etc).

HOV LANE STICKERS

We have been looking at a VOLT but would like to spend the money on Toyota car instead. Also - can certainly use a little bit more space than VOLT. How much is RAV4EV in these days?

Any suggestions?

Let me just say.... Welcome to this forum.

If you have not read through some of the threads here, this is a quick summary.

1. Toyota will not sell you a Rav4EV if you are outside CA.
2. Authorized CA Toyota Dealers can sell you one and you can arrange for transport. But you will not get any support from Toyota Corporate.
3. Any work done on the Rav4EV will require you to bring back to Authorized CA dealer.
4. CA Corporate will not pay any out of state dealer for doing the 24month/25k miles work.. ie. rotate tires.

Look at the "$5,800 Toyota Cash for 2014 Rav4 EV by Jan 6, 2014" sticky thread (last page). Tony has outlined everything in detail.

It will be interesting to see the sales figures for this month. I can't imagine many are being sold. Without substantial incentives, the vehicle is just too expensive. There's no way I would have ditched my Volt for the RAV4 EV (and I am thrilled with the swap, by the way) without the amazing lease special that ran over the summer until the end of September. If I were to get the same lease today, it would cost $300 more per month.

In my view, Toyota must seem satisfied with the trajectory of sales and will hit their target of 2600 by 2015.

28. That is the number.

I expect better incentives for Tomorrow. Or you would think. Being this is Toyota, who the hell knows.

Wow.... Dianne has posted her Rav4EV today. The $14k lease cash is back!

Guess 28 sold/leased in Dec did the trick.

How does the new lease deal compare with the July 2013 where the lease discount cash was called "$15,400 TFS Subvention Lease Cash" and apparently, you had to pay sales tax on the discount?
Is the Fed tax credit of $7500 going to Toyota or the buyer in the current lease deal?
Is the $2500 CA rebate and the free charging station still available this year?

Considering taking the plunge, but somewhat overwhelmed by the issues reported here; although many also have good experiences and love their cars.

Input welcomed and appreciated :)

I guess the simple answer is that it is almost as good. That $1400 extra subvention amounts to about $39 per month for those of us who leased over the summer. But the present deal is still very good, and one that I likely would jump on if I was now shopping.

As for being overwhelmed by the issues, since this is a message board, you're likely to see a lot more posts regarding things going wrong than things going right. On that vain, I think one of the administrators should put out a poll to all of us to see how many have had any problems. I'm at 4000 miles now and I've had no problems.

How does the RAV4EV compare to your Volt? I'm hoping the RAV4 has some of the same tech stuff I like in the Volt (send directions to NAV, pre-heat, iPhone app, etc.) Did the lease expire or did you trade it in?

I've got one year left on my Volt and was thinking of leasing the RAV4. I also see there are new 24 month leases ($359/month with $3K down- 12K miles)

Thanks in advance.

The 24 month lease would NOT qualify for the $2500 California rebate.

You can't send directions to navigation like the Volt and LEAF (I used that a lot in my two LEAF's).

After selling only 28 cars in December 2013, Toyota is back to blowing them out with huge incentives

NOTE 4: January 2014, the new 24 month lease offer does not qualify for the $2500 California state mail-in rebate. The lease must be a minimum of 36 months

NOTE 5: The dealer may try to sell you a low mileage "used" car so that they can claim and keep the government incentives.

Apply for your California HOV lane stickers (less than $20) after you have a license plate issued to your car:

There is only one factory Rav4 EV option: Color

Blizzard Pearl white (about $395 extra)
Blue (most popular color)
Silver (least popular color)

Hey bruin nut,

I was shopping for EV's and some people here told me about the Volt, since you had the Volt and now the RAV4 EV, what are some insights you have? I just test drove the Volt and I was amazed by the car, is just the lease offer wasn't that good, I got $1,100 drive off, zero down, 15k, monthly $459 with tax included. Not sure if it's a good deal, but I didn't like the fact that Ally Financial is keeping $5,000 of the federal rebate and giving back "only" $2,500.00 ...

For RAV4 and Leaf I know the rebate is fully passed to the customer. So now I am checking when I can visit Dianne at Carson Toyota... To me, I know if I don't have any problem with the RAV4 EV, I am much more inclined to keep it after the 3 years lease, as compared to the Volt.

Although, the gas generator is good option to have to "fight" range anxiety, but also on the other hand.. is another weight on the car if you can drive it fully electric.

I appreciate some of your thoughts since you have owned both.

Thanks
Daniel

The RAV4 EV is a cheap, poorly equipped SUV with a world class drive train. (Tesla) Toyota is making deals that are dubious at best for many reasons. First, the ~$14k they bring to the deals is TAXIBLE!! They could have dropped the price and it should not be taxable. Included in the $14k is ~$7500 Federal Tax Credit which they pocket...and YOU pay TAX on to California.

January 2013 we opted to do our first EV as a Ford Focus EV. The lease deal as $2500 down (total, unlike Toyota), $195/mo + tax 36 mos 10,500 miles ( would have gotten 12k if I had it to do over). This beast has everything....(unlike the RAV4). Run the numbers.... RAV4 is 2X the total cost of ownership vs. Focus. Leaf is not far from that.

RAV4 has about 40% greater range is you are under 65MPH, BUT takes a lot more time to charge if you have to mid trip.

Toyota will have to dump another ~1400 of the 2600 of these 3 year old models before the end of the year or sooner. If you have to have an SUV , this might be a good buy. If you are mainly looking at EVs, there is a lot of competition with superior products at lower costs.

The Ford has been flawless except for one thing....the car is supposed to charge at pre-set times for off peak power and Ford support has been really lame for MONTHS trying to resolve this issue. Otherwise it is a much quieter vehicle than the RAV4. I would expect Toyota to do a far better job when servicing is necessary. The car is also very zippy and comfy. In my weekend test drive of the RAV4 comfort was not one of its strong points.

I really like the Focus Electric, but Ford has demonstrated very clearly that they don't care about their only EV. They're only slightly better than Toyota. At least you can get a Focus Electric in any state.

I hope when the '15 Focus rolls out, they offer the BEV in the new body style, and find a way to do it with much less cabin intrusion.

Daniel,
While I'm not bruin nut, I did have the 2011 LEAF and now have the Volt and RAV4EV so I'll chime in. Of the EVs that I've had, I would say that the Volt is the most versatile. I found the LEAF to be most exciting, in part because it was the first on the market; the Achilles heel for it is the battery degradation without a TMS. The Rav4EV is most fun to drive and really got rid of any range anxiety I had. SO it depends on your needs, I think, which is the better choice. If you drive 40 miles or less a day, the Volt would be my first choice because of the versatility and ability to not use gas on a daily basis. My wife drives only 10 miles a day to and from work but makes a trip that's 120 miles each way at the weekends so she's driving the Volt these days. I drive some 30-50 miles a day and take a trip from San Diego to LA nearly weekly and find that the Rav4EV works well for me.

The Volt has been trouble free in the last 2 years that I've had it. The Rav4EV hasn't done as well in the 6 months that I've had it. After about 2-3 months, the check EV system warning came on, the traction battery died and the car went into reduced power mode when I was driving. See here: http://myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=765 that took some 3 weeks to fix. I get it back and a month or 2 later I get the check EV system warning again; this time the gateway ECU was bad. It took another 3 weeks to fix. When it works, I love the Rav4.

I've gotten 6 in my extended family to buy Volts! Most recently, my father in law got one for $22,000 (after rebates and before taxes). The dealer I worked with in Culver City gave us $4000 off MSRP and threw in a lot of extras. Message me and I can get you in touch with the right people if interested.

LEASE DOWN-PAYMENTS:

I never recommend putting any money down an a lease to get a lower monthly lease payment. If the car is "totaled" as you drive it off the dealership's lot, all your down payment was just lost forever.

$7500 federal credit (IRS form 8936) applies to new cars only with purchase only, not on a lease. Toyota did not pass this credit to you on a lease prior to July 2013, but now they have begun offering you the $7500 fed tax credit in the lease. You have to owe the IRS at least $7500 for this taxable year to get the full benefit of $7500 in a purchase. No carry-overs to next year. If you only owe $1234 in federal taxes, you will only get $1234 of the $7500 credit.

MODEL YEAR DIFFERENCES

The only differences between a 2013 and 2012 model year is the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) has a "D" the replaces the "C" in the 8th digit from the right. The 2014 has an E.

No, the Rav4 EV won't be extended or continued after 2600 are built.

USED Rav4 EV 's:

If you buy used, even with almost zero miles on the car, you not only lose the tax credits and rebates, you may also lose the ability to "Lemon Law" the car should it come to that.

OUT OF STATE SERVICE AND WARRANTY CLAIMS

Just know that an out-of-state dealer may be willing to service your Rav4 EV, but Toyota USA may not pay them for warranty claim reimbursements and the service payments for Toyota Care. Kevin Spillane, Toyota Customer rep for the Rav4EV, has this to say about out-of-state servicing:

1) Toyota Customer Care - the normal 5000 mile interval checkups. Not covered outside of California authorized dealers. Expect any out-of-state-dealer who performs a routine service to your car to be denied payment by Toyota for "Toyota Care". No matter what your out-of-state dealer tells you, it won't be covered under "Toyota Customer Care"

2) Tesla drivetrain problems - Not covered outside of California authorized dealers.

3) Non-EV problems but specific to Rav4 EV - like a failed heater on a "case by case basis" (that means that they can jerk you around if they feel like it). They have an authorized field engineer coming to a local dealer to perform the work. It has nothing to do with the dealer themselves, it's just a place to work on the car.

4) Rav4 issues shared with the oil burning version - covered.

NOTE TO ALL OUT OF STATE BUYERS:

NEW FOR OCTOBER 2013: Lease bonus cash is only good for cars registered NEW in the state of California.

It should show "N/A" twice for miles and rate per mile in section 10 of the lease contract, "Excessive Wear and Use".

If you don't want the navigation screen to automatically pop back to the map mode, press the "Home" button below the screen (like on an iPad / iPhone), then press the lower right hand corner symbol for page 2, then press the upper left hand symbol, then scroll down until you see Auto Screen Change, then select OFF.
