Good morning Tony. My 2012 Leaf lease will be ending soon and I'm looking into leasing another EV. Because of battery degradation and Nissan doing nothing to resolve the issue, I wouldn't consider going to another Leaf.
I saw your post regarding the problems with your Rav4 EV. Do you have any reason to believe that the 2014 Rav4 EV has resolved these problems? Until I read your post, the Rav4 EV was my first choice followed by the Spark and Focus. I would appreciate your suggestion in helping me decide. I would go Spark EV in a heartbeat because of the range and battery cooling but I'm not really comfortable with a sub compact.

Take care, Tony

Went to a dealership in the Bay Area today and I want to add a data point that yes, it's until 3/31 according to what they told me today.

I've been updating the first post of this thread each month with the current Toyota offer.

I then change the title to refect the offer:

Re: $16,500 Toyota Lease Cash for 2014 Rav4 EV by Mar 31, 2014

Is there no more unlimited miles lease? I was talking to a dealership about another one and they said that it is no longer offered. Thanks!

It's not March 31 yet, so yes, Toyota Financial is still offering it.

The clueless dealer might not know that, though.

I was told that he looked on their systems and it does not show. Is there any document that I could prove to him that it is available?

There was a problem before with dealers not doing the paperwork correctly and TFS sending out letters that stated a mileage limit. If the dealer you're talking to doesn't know how to do it, I would find another that does know how to do it the right way.

Any word on the current deal now that 3/31 has passed?

I'm finally ready to take the plunge.

And thanks for the great work here on this thread.

****************

NOTE 1: EXPECT THE DEALER'S FINANCE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE PROBLEMS INPUTTING THE UNLIMITED MILEAGE LEASE IN THEIR COMPUTER. MAKE SURE YOUR LEASE DOCUMENTS ARE PROPER FOR WHEN TOYOTA FINANCIAL REJECTS IT MANY WEEKS LATER. It should show "N/A" twice for miles and rate per mile in section 10 of the lease contract, "Excessive Wear and Use".

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8745#p8745

NOTE 2: NEW FOR OCTOBER 2013: Lease bonus cash is only good for cars registered NEW in the state of California. That means you won't be able to lease out-of-state at the reduced prices, because Toyota will not get the 3 California Air Resources Board (CARB) Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) credits unless first registered in California.

NOTE 3: July 2013, the lease discount cash was called "$15,400 TFS Subvention Lease Cash" Yes, you get to pay sales tax on the discount!!!

NOTE 4: January 2014, the new 24 month lease offer does not qualify for the $2500 California state mail-in rebate. The lease must be a minimum of 36 months

NOTE 5: The dealer may try to sell you a low mileage "used" car so that they can claim and keep the government incentives.

NOTE 6: Even if your out-of-state dealer says they will work on your car, read this thread:

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=11236#p11236

NOTE 7: The state of California is running out of money for the $2500 rebate checks. Right now (April 2014), you can expect a check in September 2014. After April, there may not be anything.

Update on cost comparisons with electric and oil burner Rav4 EV with current lease incentive of $16,500 off. California only, offer good through May 5, 2014. When the last of 2600 are built, they won't make or sell any more:

Since you could easily drive 100,000 miles in 3 years on an unlimited mileage lease, here's that comparison with a $500 per month / zero down lease / unlimited miles. Lease "sales price" is $500 multiplied by 36 months:

-------------- Rav4 EV --- Rav4 EV ---- Rav4 V6 oil burner
--------------- lease ----- purchase ---- purchase

Sales Price- $18,000 --- $51,000 ----$26,000
Fuel cost ---$ 3,000 ---- $ 3,000 -----$18,000
Oil changes ---------------------------- $ 300
Smog Check----------------------------$ 100
Maintenance $1300 ----- $ 1300 -----$ 1900

Subtotals -- $22,300 --- $55,300 --- $46,300
Tax breaks - (2500) ---- (10,000) --- $ 0
Feb discount - N/A ------ (2,500) ---- $ 0

Net costs -- $19,800 --- $42,800 ---- $46,300

*************************************

Equity ----- $ 0 --------- $15,000 ---- $ 8,000

New Battery - N/A ----- (36,000) ---- $ 0

Net equity - $ N/A ----- (21,000) ---- $ 8,000

********************************

LEASE DOWN-PAYMENTS:

I never recommend putting any money down an a lease to get a lower monthly lease payment. If the car is "totaled" as you drive it off the dealership's lot, all your down payment was just lost forever.

Click on this link to see a typical "zero down" Rav4 EV lease:

$7500 federal credit (IRS form 8936) applies to new cars only with purchase only, not on a lease. Toyota did not pass this credit to you on a lease prior to July 2013, but now they have begun offering you the $7500 fed tax credit in the lease. You have to owe the IRS at least $7500 for this taxable year to get the full benefit of $7500 in a purchase. No carry-overs to next year. If you only owe $1234 in federal taxes, you will only get $1234 of the $7500 credit.

$2,500 California state rebate for new cars only. Apply here for the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) which is funded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and administered statewide by the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE), 9325 Sky Park Court, #100, San Diego, CA 92123. Your state or province may also have incentives for out of state sales.

CAVEAT EMPTOR: known dealer scam is to sell you a "used" car and keep the tax credit. This is what can happen if you fall for the dealer's deception:

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8134#p8134

April 2014: the state of California may run out of money in this program after April.

EXTENDED WARRANTY

I personally would not consider an extended warranty on a 36,000 mile lease. Your car will always be within the factory warranty period.

I do not normally buy the extended warranty at a dealer, but instead wait until I'm getting close to the end of the factory warranty period; for the Rav4 EV, that's 3 years / 36,000 miles. This way, you can actually shop for the best price amongst dealers anywhere in the USA.

Don't let the finance salesperson pressure you into a warranty (to increase their profit... called the "back-end" in the business, and that's exactly where you'll get it). If you do buy it, and subsequently cancel, it will take them many weeks or months to refund your money. In addition, they will prorate the months and miles on the car, even though it had a factory warranty concurrent with the extended warranty.

There is absolutely no reason to buy the warranty until you are absolutely sure you will go past the warranty period, and you know you have the best price. Then, it will likely exclude anything that would matter, like the battery!! By the way, the list price on that battery is $36,000.

MODEL YEAR DIFFERENCES

The only differences between a 2013 and 2012 model year is the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) has a "D" the replaces the "C" in the 8th digit from the right. The 2014 has an E. You will find the VIN through the front window, looking from the outside on the driver's side, at the bottom.

I do not expect that there will be many 2013 model year cars still available. The 2014 model year will presumably be the last of the run after 2600 total are produced.

Here are the sales to date:

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=418#p418

No, the Rav4 EV won't be extended or continued after 2600 are built.

CALIFORNIA CONTRACT CANCELLATION POLICY

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d05/vc11709_2.htm

California law does not provide for a "cooling-off" or other cancellation period for vehicle lease or purchase contracts. Therefore, you cannot later cancel such a contract simply because you change your mind, decide the vehicle costs too much, or wish you had acquired a different vehicle. After you sign a motor vehicle purchase or lease contract, it may only be canceled with the agreement of the seller or lessor or for legal cause, such as fraud.

************************

USED Rav4 EV 's:

If you buy used, even with almost zero miles on the car, you not only lose the tax credits and rebates, you may also lose the ability to "Lemon Law" the car should it come to that.

***************************

CALIFORNIA SALES TAX (purchase) or USE TAX (lease)

On an "in-state" purchase, you pay the applicable tax for your county/city. For an in state lease, you pay a "use tax" on the monthly payment. For out-of-state, you pay nothing to California with a proper Bill of Laden from a shipping company.

DO NOT TAKE DELIVERY IN CALIFORNIA

...unless you want to pay California taxes!!! You will pay applicable taxes in your out-of-state jurisdiction. There's a whole thread devoted to out-of-state purchases and leases.

**************************

OUT OF STATE SERVICE AND WARRANTY CLAIMS

Just know that an out-of-state dealer may be willing to service your Rav4 EV, but Toyota USA may not pay them for warranty claim reimbursements and the service payments for Toyota Care. Kevin Spillane, Toyota Customer rep for the Rav4EV, has this to say about out-of-state servicing:

1) Toyota Customer Care - the normal 5000 mile interval checkups. Not covered outside of California authorized dealers. Expect any out-of-state-dealer who performs a routine service to your car to be denied payment by Toyota for "Toyota Care". No matter what your out-of-state dealer tells you, it won't be covered under "Toyota Customer Care"

2) Tesla drivetrain problems - Not covered outside of California authorized dealers.

3) Non-EV problems but specific to Rav4 EV - like a failed heater on a "case by case basis" (that means that they can jerk you around if they feel like it). They have an authorized field engineer coming to a local dealer to perform the work. It has nothing to do with the dealer themselves, it's just a place to work on the car.

4) Rav4 issues shared with the oil burning version - covered.

NOTE TO ALL OUT OF STATE BUYERS:

NEW FOR OCTOBER 2013: Lease bonus cash is only good for cars registered NEW in the state of California.

***************************

IF YOUR CAR IS DELIVERED WITHOUT FUNCTIONING INTERIOR LIGHTS:

A pin is located in the engine bay passenger side fuse box to activate the lights. Inside that fuse box, there is a white "fuse" without any number and that is the "pin". Under the fuse cover, there is a location labeled "short". Put the "pin" into the "short" slot and interior function like light, garage door opener, external door handle switch will be activated.

***********************************

IF YOUR CAR IS DELIVERED WITH A REGISTRATION FOR AN OIL BURNING CAR INSTEAD OF AN ELECTRIC CAR:

Make sure your dealership ticked the correct box for "motive power" on the registration. If they incorrectly entered "gas", you'll need to get it corrected. In California, the DMV requests that the dealership complete Sections G & H of form "Reg 256". For section G, the sample response given was:

"Due to a clerical error on the Report of Sale, the motive power was entered as "gas (G)", when the actual motive power for this vehicle is "100% electric (E)". Please correct. No fraud intended."

The dealer then signs and dates Section H.

************************************

IF YOUR CAR'S UNLIMITED LEASE IS REJECTED BY TOYOTA FINANCIAL

EXPECT THE DEALER'S FINANCE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE PROBLEMS INPUTTING THE UNLIMITED MILEAGE LEASE IN THEIR COMPUTER. MAKE SURE YOUR LEASE DOCUMENTS ARE PROPERLY REFLECT AN UNLIMITED LEASE FOR WHEN TOYOTA FINANCIAL REJECTS IT MANY WEEKS LATER. It should show "N/A" twice for miles and rate per mile in section 10 of the lease contract, "Excessive Wear and Use".

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8745#p8745

************************************

IF YOU WANT YOUR CAR DELIVERED WITH SPECIFIC SETTINGS:

You will likely want your dealer to set the reverse beeper to a single beep. I highly recommend writing this in the sales contract, particularly for an out of state sale. You will not like this distracting beeping in reverse. Also, I recommend setting the auto door locks to whatever setting you want prior to delivery (always unlocked, lock when in Drive, only unlock driver's door, etc).

If you don't want the navigation screen to automatically pop back to the map mode, press the "Home" button below the screen (like on an iPad / iPhone), then press the lower right hand corner symbol for page 2, then press the upper left hand symbol, then scroll down until you see Auto Screen Change, then select OFF.

What happens when the $16,500 lease cash offer ends? Will it go back down to $14,000 or will they offer even more money? (obviously asking for guesses as we hit the final days of the offer)

Sales are declining - 101 Feb, 73 Mar, 69 Apr. They need to sell 1,000 more before the Hydrogen Car comes late in 2015, so they can't let the sales drop any lower. Draw your own conclusion.

The $299/mo deal is on Buyatoyota.com with $3,999 due at signing, apparently a $500 increase, so I'm guessing the residual dropped by about that much.

If anyone does, it'll be Diane. I'm awaiting an update from her to see if anything has changed.
