RAV 4 EV In SEQUIM WASHINGTON
Hello Everyone!! Just got my 2012 RAV4 EV, shipped to us in Sequim Washington.. AND have promptly got the screen of death! "Take it for EV service immediately"!! It went into neutral, so I coasted off. turned it off.. and then it performed fine after that and still does, but the screen of death remains.. QUESTION! Has anyone in Washington State found the correct Toyota Dealership to take it too?? ie. EV authorized.. Preferably within 100 miles of Seattle.. I have read posts referring to Wash. Toyota dealers that claimed they could do EV... Has anyone performed as promised??? Read some scary posts about New motors and Batteries needed.. YIKES! However, it seems Tesla is stepping up and fixing things.. PLEASE post back guys.. I love this thing, and need to know who in Washington will sort me out.. Also, unhooked the neg ground on the battery hoping for an old school reboot/fix.. no luck.. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!! Marc 360-775-7970

Just so I understand, your car has the "screen of death" yet continues to be drivable?

Did you get the screen of death WHILE driving?? I have had it twice, but only when turning on the car. If I got it while in motion I'd be much more upset. Please clarify. I don't want to assume anything wrong...

Yes.. We were in motion, going about 50mph, on a downhill.. I engaged the 'B' to regenerate some power.. and then the screen read something about 'check power steering' , and then went to the 'screen of death' (check EV system immediately) . It kicked itself into neutral and would not go back into drive, so i coasted to a stop.. still wouldn't go back into drive.. So, I turned off the power.. Then powered back up.. Screen of death still there but it did go back into drive, so I drove home (another 5 miles or so).. checked it a few times over the next few hours and screen of death kept popping up.. And now, this morning, the screen of death is GONE.. and everything seems to be working fine.. a bit Unnerving! Can Toyota check out what happened remotely??? THANKS GUYS!!!!

Holy crapola! That takes this to an entirely new level. If I were you, I'd take it to Toyota immediately and insist that they resolve it. If that can happen while in motion, then all sorts of safety concerns come to mind. And for Toyota, they should be worried about liability, bad oress, ... All things that may be able to help you to get out-of-CA service.

Tesla can log in remotely and download some information. For my car, the screen of death seems to be related to communications between the Tesla and Toyota computers. I doubt Tesla can do much about that remotely. My car is still in the shop for a screen of death issue. It has been there for a week now and they have no clue. My lemon law hearing is next week and I'm wondering if it will still be in the shop then.

Mine is also still in the shop, going on two weeks. The dealer did call and ask some questions from the Tesla guy; let's call him "Jim".

They actually called twice to inquire if I had ever plugged anything into the OBDII port and the Tesla OBDII type port. Of course I have, since I pasted it all over the Internet. Then the questions went along the line of did I put anything in the code (in other words, not just listening, but actively pinging or adding code). That, I absolutely haven't done.

I figured it would end in "warranty denied", but to their credit, I think Jim believed me, particularly when I finished with, "We did that last Nov/Dec, and now in April, the motor and firmware were changed in my car and a week later the screen of death disabled the car."

Even when I get the car back someday, I still have a laundry list of issues. Heck, that bumper lining up with the fender issue seems to affect a lot of cars. They claimed to fix mine last time, but it seems worse, not better. Personally, I predict the mold isn't right for the unique front plastic bumper cover, and we know that will never be fixed.

I really need my car in the next two weeks to start the BC2BC rally, so now I'm getting worried it might not be ready for that.

That's what was wrong with my car... communication between the Toyota and Tesla computer. That's what the gateway ECU is for and is what Tesla replaced on mine after 2 weeks in the shop. The EV service tech working on my car told me that the computers were not communicating early on during my 2 week stay. He said that the Toyota ECU and Tesla ECU spoke two entirely different languages and that the gateway ECU is needed for the two to communicate. Mine failed after 1800 mi.

To state the obvious this is just unacceptable. This sounds like a recall issue.
Yeah, in the case of RAVER's issue, I'd file a safety complaint at http://www.safercar.gov/ once the issue is fixed and not determined to be something like rats having chewed on wiring.

It sounds like you were "lucky" that yours failed completely. If that is my issue, then it is not obvious or it is intermittent because whenever they look, everything is fine. They have ripped through my car looking. They did impedance tests on every pair of every communication cable. Toyota techs and Tesla techs have gone over the car. Then they all go away and say that they are analyzing data. That makes me think that there is a software communications issue. But, of course, they won't tell me that, and I can only guess.

Yes... I agree that I was lucky that it failed for them in the shop. I guess it's some sort of service protocol to check the connectors and cables prior to calling in the big guns from Tesla. My tech said he kept telling Toyota that it's not a connector or cable issue... that the computers are not talking to one another.

It seems that things started to happen once I called the GM and respectfully chewed on him! I was pissed! Don't know if it was that or the Tesla guys were already on their way but it was repaired within 2 days of my conversation with the GM. **** rolls down hill!

Tell them you want a new car if they can't find the problem. That's what I said and I think it gets their attention!

I'm hoping the info they got from your case is being shared and that when other owners show up at different dealerships complaining of the same error message they check into this issue first and foremost rather than starting from scratch. The possibility that there are multiple problems cause the Check EV message is a concern of course... At any rate, The Rav4 is my first EV, going to hit 1000 miles on the way home from work today and I tell you, this car is a blast to drive. Love it. I just want to feel I can trust the car like I trust my Prius and the other Toyotas I've had.

Thanks for your PM. I'm sure you are in good hands with Port Townsend. You've owned 78 vehicles... wow

It's looking like a faulty gateway is causing many if not most of these failures. That makes life easier having a suspect component known as problematic for other "early adopters". Sadly... some of us are more "early adopters" than others. Just the luck of the draw.

It has happened to me 5 times just putting it in drive. Each time I restarted the Rav 4 or 5 times and the screen of death went away. Yesterday was the 5th time for me.
