Long story short, my 2014 EV was in the shop for months due to lack of availability of the the onboard ev battery charger. Finally replaced it in 09/2023, along with the 12V battery.

The 12V battery just died yesterday, about one year after it was replaced.

Is there something I should be aware of that could have caused the 12V battery to die so quickly?? I am mainly concerned that there's something else potentially wrong with the car.

Thanks!

One possible cause could be a parasitic drain, something in the car drawing power even when it’s off. This can happen if a module didn’t fully shut down or if there’s an accessory wired directly to the battery. You might want to have an electrician or the dealership check for any unusual power draws. Do you use any aftermarket devices, like dashcams or GPS units?

If a dealership installed a new 12V battery one year ago, they should have a pro-rated warranty on it. I would inquire about that. If they don't give you any consideration for the short life of the the one they put in, go to Costco and get the Group24F Interstate battery. It will last a lot longer than the Toyota one because it is larger, using the whole space available in the battery tray. The factory specified Group 35 size is smaller and cycles deeper when leaving the RAV4 EV parked for multiple days.

If the lead-acid battery was left in a discharged state for very long, one year service life is about what you could expect. Lead-acid batteries really don't like being either discharged below 20% nor left there.

Thanks. I got a new battery from the dealership last week because the car was waiting 6 months for a windshield from the warranty paint job that broke it. They nuked it to jump the battery and I could smell sulfur and see fumes the next day so I brought it back and they swapped it for a new Toyota branded one. I’ll buy the interstate when this one needs replacing. Just glad it didn’t do any damage to anything else
