Hello everyone,

When driving my 2012 RAV4 EV the other day, I got the following
dreaded messages:

Check EV System
Have Your Vehicle Checked by a Dealership Immediately.

High Battery Temp
Battery Cooling Now
Power Output and Ma Speed Limited
Please Wait for Full Power

The car has only 44K+ miles, and it hasn't been driven
for the past several months or so. The last time it was driven,
there were no signs of any problems.

First question is how can it develop such a catastrophic failure,
while it's been sitting in the garage undriven for the past several
months?

Second question is, if I get one of those OBD diagnostics tool,
will it help me to isolate the source of the problem?

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Peter

1. Check coolant levels:
https://youtu.be/EYgtLmQsoHs

2. One of the most likely causes of such a malfunction is a breakdown of one of HV battery cooling water pumps.

3. For consultation and/or remote diagnostics of RAV4EV Tesla systems, use this form:
https://alflash.com.ua/service/rav4ev-precheck-customize-list-2/

alflash,

Thanks very much for your reply.

I checked all the coolant levels, and they are all normal.

What kind of consultation can you provide? How do you provide the consultation, and how much do you charge for the consultation?

Thank you

Ok,
My Consultations about RAV4EV
1. Is free for charge,
2. They are based on the successful remote diagnostic experience of over a hundred RAV4EVs in locations from Vladivostok to Vancouver and California (e.g. http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2530 )

p.s. Using this mode
https://youtu.be/QpiwFtov26Y
check the 12V battery voltage with IGN ON and Ready modes.

p.s.s. You can use (for read DTC) Generic OBD-II scantool?

alflash,

Thanks very much for your generous help.

I watched your diagnostic Youtube video and accessed the secret menu on the navigation display. The battery voltage is normal.

Yes, I used OBD2 tool and got a P312F code in the EV Propulsion System. What does this mean? What should I do next?

Thank you very much,

Peter

This code is only evidence that a malfunction was detected in RAV4EV Tesla system
https://alflash.com.ua/2019/to_rav4ev/p312f.png

This code can be erased by disconnecting the 12V battery (for 5 minutes) with the ignition off or by following procedure

Can your scantool read Freeze Frame data
https://youtu.be/11t9NRY-qHo ?

alflash,

I'm glad to know you're able to isolate the problem to the Tesla side.

Ok, I displayed and saved the Freeze Frame data into a .TSE file.

How can I send you the .TSE file through this forum?

Thank you,

Peter

alflash,

I couldn't figure out how to send the .TSE file to you through the forum, so I've inserted the four screen shots here:

Hope you can find some useful info from these screen shots.

Thank you,

UPDATE
=======

I followed up with Vladimir Leshchenko at https://alflash.com.ua/index.html

He performed a remote diagnostics and immediately found the problem to be
a failed powertrain coolant pump.

In a previous post, https://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2484,
dfergenson mentioned he replaced his powertrain coolant pump with a Tesla
coolant pump he had purchased on eBay, part number 6007376-00-E.

While shopping on eBay for a used pump, I found what seemed to be a slight
discrepancy in the Tesla replacement part number.

After bringing up this discrepancy with him, he confirmed that the correct part number
should be 6007367-00-E.

plee12, your problem sounds a little like the in-warranty repair that Toyota had to make to my RAV4 EV. While driving, my car would go into turtle mode with the EV system error. After turning the car on and off everything would be fine for a while. I took it into Toyota several times but they could not determine the problem. A Tesla tech came out with initially the same lack of diagnosis. Finally, Tesla suspected the problem was with the two motor temperature gauges. There are two temp sensors in the motor. One is backup in case the other one fails. I my case, Tesla suspected both had failed or were in the process of failing completely. Tesla will not let Toyota touch their motor for proprietary reason so Tesla sent out a new motor that Toyota installed. I have not had the problem since (looking for wood to knock on). The problem probably occurred around 10K miles and it is now at 80K+.

Let's see what Vlad comes up with.

Pay attention to the strange logic of the error messages.
The information display indicates that the battery is overheated when
a) her temperature is normal (22.5 C),
b) battery cooling pumps are serviceable and working,
c) inverter and stator temperature are normal,
d) the powertrain pump is actually faulty, which can be seen from the fault code and from the actual scandata.
This may be the cause of misunderstanding of the actual diagnostic data and conclusions based on its results.

Note. One of the possible causes of a pump malfunction may be the lack of a feedback signal.

FINAL UPDATE
=============

jfletter, thanks for your additional inputs.

I'm glad to report the suspected powertrain coolant pump was indeed the culprit. Replaced the pump today and took a test drive of 50+ miles and there was no problem at all.

I can't thank defergenson and Vladimir enough for the incredible outpouring of support I received. Kudos to them for putting another RAV4 EV back on the road within a short span of 7 days from initial diagnosis to ordering the replacement pump and to replacing the pump and coolant.

Also, last but not least, many thanks to eBay seller evpartsguy, https://www.ebay.com/str/evpartsguy, for supplying the correct Tesla replacement coolant pump.

How involved was replacing the pump? Did you need to lift the car to access? I'm apparently in need of the "left" coolant pump and would consider doing it myself if it's not much more involved than say replacing brake pads on an ICE car.

If you can replace brakes, you can replace one of these coolant pumps, should be a ~10 minute job.
