"...a Weibull analysis of that data suggests that two-thirds of early (2012 and 2013) Model S cars can expect a drivetrain failure within 60,000 miles."

Seems like this will have an impact on our Ravs as well.

I'm confident that the RAV4 EV fleet will reflect this data.

I wonder if Tesla is making changes to the replacement motors they are delivering to RAV4EVs or if they are just giving us ones without any fixes (same bearings etc). What they do may depend on the nature of their support contract with Toyota.

It sure would be nice if Toyota and Tesla extended the warranty for these motors to something like 10 years / 100K miles...

What's pathetic is that the most reliable part on an EV is Tesla's most unreliable and they make the EV drive look like something that is not well built when traditionally is has been a key argument for EV reliability. Pretty shameful.

If enough people would participate in the RAV4 EV owner's database we could build our own study. Fortunately, I haven't had anything to add to my entry.

And the part that most concerned buyers of EVs turned out to be incredibly reliable.

People are often critical of the Volt drive system for being so complex compared to a pure EV. But if you look at the Volt forums, you will find few if any mention of actual problems. Tesla, by contrast, seems to have done a poor job on the supposedly simple motors

My Rav has horrible whine at 36 K miles, waiting for replacement to come in

Is the whine considered failure in that 2/3rds number?
Have any failed to actually move forward?

That's the problem... One can split hairs/argue re: the definition of "failure". The more accurate word to use is replacement (and maybe later, repair too), for whatever reason.

Yes, some of the Model S drive units have failed to provide motive force. Those are a lot rarer than the DU noise problems.

Edmunds got their 2nd DU replacement (http://www.edmunds.com/tesla/model-s/2013/long-term-road-test/2013-tesla-model-s-is-the-third-drive-unit-the-charm.html) after http://www.edmunds.com/tesla/model-s/2013/long-term-road-test/2013-tesla-model-s-stuck-on-the-freeway.html happened that left them stranded about 8K miles after the original DU was replaced for noise.

DU got replaced again about 12K miles later, this time for milling noise: http://www.edmunds.com/tesla/model-s/2013/long-term-road-test/2013-tesla-model-s-drive-unit-iv-the-milling.html.
