Toyota to mass-produce electric vehicles

Toyota Motor intends to start mass-producing electric vehicles by 2020, hoping to expand its lineup of green automobiles beyond hybrid and fuel-cell cars.

"We would like to refrain from commenting on such details, such as the schedule of development and production since it relates to our future product plan.

Toyota has made efforts in every direction on various powertrains, including electric vehicles (EVs), when it comes to the development of environmentally friendly vehicles. Toyota will continue to improve on the development of eco-cars, ranging from hybrids (HVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHVs), to electric and fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs), based on the advantages and capabilities of each powertrain.

We believe that environmentally friendly vehicles can only help to improve the environment if they become available to a large number of customers, and in relation to this, Toyota will consider introducing EVs to the market.

We will consider the roll-out of EVs alongside Toyota's FCV lineup, which are both zero emission vehicles, based on the advantages and capabilities of each, as well as the market conditions of each region/country, as we continue to closely monitor the corresponding situations."

RAV4 EV Generation 3?

One can hope... glad Toyota is finally seeing the light.

Day late and a dollar short

They specifically said that it would be based on a Prius plug-in are similar type car and that it would be offered in Japan, California and China.

Further, they said it would go 186 miles, which really means maybe 100-120 miles EPA (just like RAV4 EV).

They are obviously attempting to fill in the gap's that the hydrogen cars are not able to do with respect to regulatory compliance.

There was no mention of a dedicated car or mass production or worldwide sales, etc.

Despite cutting the price on several occasions, with now a lease at only $350 (down from $500) in California, the Japanese automaker can’t find a market for the vehicle and only delivered 782 units since it started deliveries last year – and that’s including the state buying dozens of them for their own fleets to justify the millions of dollars spent on refueling infrastructure.

That makes me sad.

Also, I believe the EV team right now with Toyota is composed of 4 engineers or something? Also Akio Toyoda will head Toyota's EV division which I thought was WEIRD other than him maybe making 1,000% SURE no one dares to make anything actually good.

To be honest I love the RAV4 EV but I am disliking Toyota QUITE a bit. The fact they made it so hard for somethings on this vehicle that makes you get a headache at times is really discomforting. Plus, if they do any sort of EV will they give us rav4 ev owners anything? No

Still the rav4 ev is an amazing vehicle with so much potential if you are able to make modifications to it. Still there is no real competition for the rav4 ev other than maybe the MX but its price tag is insane and now no long range charging included unless you buy an old one or one before the end of this year. 0 to 60 times on the rav = 6 to 6.1 which is not entirely too bad. If there ever is an option for an extra rear motor it sure will make the rav4 ev faster and funner .

Thanks for the info. I searched online and don't see much new news about it. Says it will come at 2018. I think by 2020 there will likely be something out there. Still, it would have to be significantly better than the rav4 ev for me to make the switch. bigger, faster, more convenient. Range isn't so much of an issue. I'd prefer a van, but whatever lol. An all electric chevy suburban would interest me for example. Something of the same or similar size to the rav4 ev would be a no-no. I don't really care about connectivity or latest gadgetry more like more space inside would be nice. Of course dual motors would be nice, but not a deal breaker. I just want something bigger. Like a chevrolet express extended size, chevrolet suburban, etc. A mini-van could work too. Hybrid pacifica is nice and big I just saw it the other day and its a decent chubby biggie. Just I don't like the ice engine maybe it if itwas more like avolt with a gas generator. I might switch for a chrysler pacifica by 2023 (Ext warranty end) if nothing else comes up. By then the CP should be cheaper used. I would preffered an all electric minivan though or full size van... or extra large SUV like a suburban or bigger. I want space.
