I was talking to a Solar City sales rep yesterday at a kiosk in the mall and he told me Tesla is planning to introduce some sort of battery backup that only operates when there is a power outage from the grid. He seemed to think it works with grid tied solar systems, which I thought would not be allowed by the NEC. Maybe it modifies the system to automatically disconnect itself from the grid in such a situation (AC grid power outrage), then effectively becomes an off-grid system as needed; sort of a hybrid solar system.

I'm guessing, but I think the purpose of this battery, is to somehow allow solar production to power certain critical loads in a house during a power outage in the daytime. THis is so that the solar system can remain in operation instead of automatically de-energizing in the absence of AC power from the grid.

It is not clear to me how this battery would be recharged, or what would happen after it cannot be recharged like at night or during a long duration outage.

Anybody else hear of this or know any details?

Solar City and Tesla are joined at the hip, so certainly it makes sense to offer. I like the various concepts of "vehicle to grid" far better, so I don't duplicate batteries. But, for purely off grid, sounds great.
