We'll be taking a weekend trip to Tahoe Keys this summer from Sacramento. Google has the trip at 108 miles from our house to the cabin where we'll be staying. Think the Rav would make it? I'm sure the cabin has a 240v plug, and we'll be there 3 days to charge on the standard 120 if not. Or should we cave and rent a Prius? TIA!

You should have no trouble getting there...just do an extended charge. I would try to drive on the slow side too...below 65 if possible. Plugshare shows some options on the way if you get into a bind. Getting back will be even easier because of the elevation change.

Charging at 120 you only get about 3 miles per hour. Almost not worth the effort. At 240 you'll be around 8 which is doable.

Questions:
Are you planning to drive much once there? If so you may find yourself spending the whole time checking the charge level...not fun.

You have a 6500 foot net elevation gain, so you have to consider that.

108 miles / 3.4 miles per kWh @ 65mph freeway speed without heater = 31.8kWh burned on level terrain.

Assuming a perfect condition battery fully charged at about 70F degrees is 41.8kWh, you have 10kWh remaining to raise the car 6500 feet to Lake Tahoe.

6500 feet * 1.8kWh additional burned per 1000 feet = 11.7kWh total.

Guess what? It won't likely get done at 65mph.

So, either go up the hill at 50-55mph and/or charge a bit enroute. if you find yourself questioning if you'll make it based on the fuel gauge (not the GOM), slow down to 45mph.

I did 151.8 miles last summer with a 4000 elevation gain at 45mph. It can be done.

There's an L2 at the Amtrak station in "downtown" Colfax. NO guarantees, but if you find it free and working - you can probably grab a bite and some juice.

I don't think he'll be taking the 80 if he's going to the Keys. I'd recommend stopping for lunch and a charge at one of the spots in Placerville on the way up, since you've got some big elevation gain on that drive. Once you get there there are L2s at the casinos, so if it turns out you don't have 240v at your place you can charge up that way. Going back to Sac you should make it in one (extended) charge easy.

You've really gotta worry about doing ~7400' elevation gain and about 98 miles to Echo Summit - if you can make it that far the last 10 miles are all downhill.

Thanks for all of the data guys! We're going up 50 to Tahoe Keys. Not much planned once we get there. Maybe a trip over to the casinos. We probably won't risk it because we have small kids. When it's just the hubby and me, we'll give it a go. I love this community!

Make it a 2hr lunch (w/ visit to a park or shopping) on top of an extended charge and I would think it was easy.
You will not be going fast up CA-50 so it is just the elevation not so much the speed.
