Just a couple weeks ago, I bought a 2013 RAV4 EV! Over the summer, a knee injury made my Model S impractical, so I did the only American thing and bought a pickup truck. Although I really like the truck, and will be using it to tow an RV soon, the 10 MPG for commuting to work wasn’t pleasant.

I’m really enjoying the RAV, even though it can’t fill the cross-country touring role. I found this one with 42k miles, and it’s in very good shape!!

Take a look through some of the recent forum posts (maybe we need to create a sticky for new owners somewhere...); there have been a few threads on motor coolant bypass you might want to check out (ie your motor is already on borrowed time, but there is a fix before things get bad/irreversible). Charger and/or contactor failure is becoming more likely with age. Otherwise these unicorns are fun little cars :)

This probably a noob question… is there a way to tell if the coolant bypass has been performed without removing the LDU?

The coolant bypass feature is relatively new (within the last 12 months), so most motors probably haven't had this mod. The thread at https://www.myrav4ev.com/threads/coolant-delete.2690/ will help.

If you look in through the passenger wheel opening, you should be able to see the end of the motor: one of the bypass options (used by QC Charge, Revolt, others) installs a new piece of machined aluminum that should be clearly visible as not original equipment. The other bypass option involves installing a blocking cap inside the motor (can be performed on the RAV4 without requiring removal of the motor, see Al's excellent write-up https://www.myrav4ev.com/threads/ldu-rotor-cooling-bypass-coolant-delete-modification.2638/)

Excellent! Thank you for the quick answer, and the link. I have been reading and Googling about this a lot in the past few days, and wondering why this wasn’t a concern with my 15 Model S 85D - but it appears that it is affected as well.

I will be checking the speed sensor as soon as it warms up a little!

Thanks again for the help!
