    EVSE permits in San Diego

I believe you should get a permit if required but it is pretty simple to do so. Some city's require you to let your utility know about an EVSE installation so the utility can make sure they have the infrastructure to handle the increased load. Tony mentioned that is the right thing to do. The...

Any recommendation on EV chargers with programmable timers?

I used a wall switch timer and a 30 Amp relay in a plastic junction box. Others have used a 30Amp 240v Intermatic timer that is sold in Home Depot as a pool pump timer. I am also on a Super Off Peak rate from Midnite to 6Am and I don't want to mess with the buggy RAV4 Timer. There are a...

    Tesla model S UMC with J1772 & JESLA(tm) conversion

Nice work Tony. I see the LED that you have put in the handle. That is a nice enhancement. Now that the price for the UMC has gone up how does the price of this EVSE compare with the other options in the market? I keep seeing the Manzanita Micro ads pop up on this forum. They have an...

    Initial Impression. Las Vegas Commute

When I charge at Charge Point I use the phone app to see the kWhrs that go into the car. At home I charge during Midnite to 6AM Super Off Peak rate and can look at my smart meter data. The smart meter information is crude because it includes any phantom loads that my home is using. I don't log...

Is a JuiceBox charging station worth buying ?

A couple years ago I bought their EMW dashboard for my VW conversion. It works great. I have heard that the kits from these guys sometimes take a little longer in development.

Charging and Console behaviors - thoughts?

My only guess is that the batteries don't generate as much heat when charging as the AC does when cooling the cabin. Also I think the onboard chargers can modulate amps based on battery temps, although I have not witnessed it happening. I have confidence in Tesla's temperature management system...

SoCal EV Meet Up Saturday, June 27, 8am - 11am, Santa Ana

Enjoy the event. Wish I could be there.

How can I convince my wife?

If she averages an easy 3 mi/kWhr that would be $0.03 per mile or $2.40 per day. Good luck. There must be a greenhouse gas calculator but I didn't find it.

Can we use a Scanguage to monitor the rav4 ev?

I bought a cheap ELM327 emulator device and got nothing, just as Tony predicted. There is however a slightly different plug in the back that is part of the Tesla system and I am curious if it has anything on it. I have a short OBD extension that I am going to modify to fit that receptacle.

    Breaker Amperage

.....and 30 Amps continuous needs 8GA. That is what I would use on a Schneider EVLink.

    Tire repair kit sealanet

I haven't had experience but I have heard stories of the sealant ruining the sensors so my plan is going to be to call AAA. In the past when I have had a tire problem, it has been a slow leak. In those cases I have a 12 volt compressor to get enough pressure in a tire to allow me to limp to a...

    Breaker Amperage

I think you have the right idea to prepare for the future. I assume what you meant is that you would put a 50 Amp breaker and correct wiring to the 14-50 receptacle. It is ok to plug in a 30 Amp device (the Scchneider EVLink) which requires a minimum 40 Amp circuit. If you later get a 40 Amp...

    REFUEL Results at Laguna Seca

By "jailbreaking" I assume you mean removing the inverter limitation on power. I have thought about that and the look I would get when I blew off some guy at the stop light. It is definitlely intriqing, but other than that I am not sure what I would do with that much torque. As it is in Sport...

    Breaker Amperage

I think there are two electricians in this dialogue. idiot electrician in Palm Springs electrician friend who is being taken by duggie to Palm Springs.

    Breaker Amperage

That is possible. The situation is complicated because there are no 40 Amp plugs and receptacles. Also I don't know if the code permits putting a dedicated 30 Amp receptacle on a 40 Amp breaker. Have you given your electrician the installation instructions? I hope you were able to enjoy a...

    LEVITON CHARGER EVB40-PST

I suspect that the charge curves of different vehicles could be different because each manufacturer has a different battery management system. In the case of the Tesla based RAV an explanation of why we might not see much taper on a regular charge cycle is that the pack is not being pushed to...

Out-of-State service in AZ, Round 1

By general service I presume what you mean is the 5000 and 10000 mile service or something wrong with a door latch or the radio. As far as I know there have been few of these reported other than the 5000 mile service which mostly is a tire rotation and inspection. The tough issue is when...

    Anybody have a 3D printer?

I broke the turn signal lens on the mirror and thought it would take forever to get. It was in stock at Torrance and the parts guy said that mirror is on several cars in addition to the Korean Carolla. In my case my dealer is probably 5 miles from Toyota headquarters in Torrance so that may be...
