This four day weekend I left my RAV4 EV plugged in for two days straight while monitoring the AC line to my L2 EVSE. Same-o same-o for the first 24 hrs. However, during the second 24 hrs, I noticed the so-called "balancing charge", which takes place at relatively low power during the last 30 minutes prior to overall charging mode completion, REPEATED again. Both of these belated charges took just under 30 minutes to complete, ~10 minutes after the preset scheduled departure time. The car was parked, continuously plugged in and unused during this entire time.
Based on this observation, I am not at all sure if what has come to be known as a "balancing charge" is in fact what it seems because is it even unnecessary to do back to back charges of this nature with nothing in-between to deplete the bulk charge of the battery?
Perhaps the RAV4 EV uses external power via a plugged in EVSE to trickle charge the battery briefly once a day when not being used for some seemingly lengthy period of time; sort of battery maintenance mode to keep it "topped off" while in long term storage.
