    Cosmetic Updates

I thought I'd share some of the things I've done for cosmetic improvements. Well, improvements to my eye anyway. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Things that I've updated: shark fin antenna gen 4 rav4 wheels de-badged (de-stickered) re-badged Toyota to Netz It's not a long...

    Another Dead RAV4 EV

These long and disappointing stories seem to be pretty typical when it comes to Toyota service departments and the Rav4 EV. They can be trusted to remove and replace large components -- but you should check their work. I have found that they forget to install fasteners and brackets when the...

    Another Dead RAV4 EV

I bought a used Tesla Model-S DC-DC converter on eBay. I bolted it in, plugged it in, and it just works. There is nothing to flash or reprogram.

    Anti sway bar upgrade?

Yes, I installed these myself in 2020. Being that it's been awhile, I don't remember enough detail to be very specific about the install procedure. But in short, I did it in my driveway with ordinary hand tools, and a large torque wrench. Looking around on eBay, it looks like the price for...

    Anti sway bar upgrade?

For the front, I installed the Cusco swaybar specified for the 2013 Toyota Harrier (ZSU60W). For the rear, I installed the Ultra Racing swaybar and brace kit UR-RL4-456P. This gives the ride a flatter turning behavior at high speed, for increased driving confidence on the highway.

    License Plate Light Upgrade

IMO, the incandescent license plate lights look sad. Even more so when one of them burns out. I've tried the plug-in LED 194 type replacement bulbs. They look good, until they start flickering and/or burn out. The incandescence are more reliable, but look dated. I thought I'd try adapting a...

    TPMS Reset Question

AFAIK, the solution is to use the Toyota Techstream software to update the TPMS sensor IDS stored in the car's ECU. I resolved this by following the procedure demonstrated here. https://youtu.be/MECPSmg5JfI I used the Mini VCI product sold here...

Repair techs cannot communicate with onboard computer

RE: I took another look at my data. I used an awk script to transform the raw Pican2 dump to .gvret for import to Savvy CAN. I found a bug in my awk script. (The values are already hex and I formatted them with %08X.) So, those strange codes are wrong.

Repair techs cannot communicate with onboard computer

It didn't take long after re-reading my post to see that I had it upside down. That's why I had CAN-H and CAN-L where RXP and RXM should have been. I should have trusted my initial instinct, which was that feeding a CAN signal into an Ethernet adapter was weird. I built my adapter based on...

Repair techs cannot communicate with onboard computer

I have been quietly working on this topic (and lurking) for awhile. But I've reached an impasse. But I'll share some of the milestones of my journey. I got started by using this snippet of wisdom. To convince myself that was right, I scoped the CAN_H (RXP) and CAN_L (RXM) lines. Using...

    Toyota buying back 2013 Rav4EVs?

Ditto. I've got many letters like that for my Prius and my wife's Yaris.

    50k range + advice?

I can't remember if I've posted this anywhere else or not. But here's what I've learned ... Toyota Motor Finance has posted on their website all of their restrictions about extended Service Agreements. However, TMF leaves the sale and maintenance of these Service Agreements up to the...

    Traction Battery Coolant System Leak

When I called, trying to get ahold of Thorn, they didn't know who I was talking about. After being transferred to another department, I had a long conversation with an agent who explained that case handlers are assigned by region, and that Thorn would not be the person to handle a case in...
