New California Corridor Fast Chargers Installed

Well, I can't believe it. There is finally evidence of the I-5 corridor fast chargers from the 2014 CEC grant being installed. The first one has popped up in PlugShare at Santa Nella Village, just north of the I-5 CA 152 interchange at the Best Western Andersen's Inn. It is listed as a single CHAdeMO charger. Unknown model and power output.

Just for reference, these are the other expected locations from that grant:
From Santa Nella Village:
74 miles to Coalinga (@ 198/I-5)
56 miles to Lost Hills (@ 46/I-5)
61 miles to Wheeler Ridge (across I-5 from Tejon Ranch Tesla Supercharger)
48 miles to Valencia

There is also supposed to be an additional unit in Lebec between Wheeler Ridge and Valencia. IIRC, it should be at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Frazier Park at I-5 and Frazier Mountain Park Road. However, it's only 15 miles up the hill from the Outlets at Tejon in Wheeler Ridge.

That is amazing and great news! I had all but given up looking for these to pop up on plugshare.

I believe that somebody on the forum (MB?) reported that Leslie Baroody of the CEC said she expected the I-5 2014 selections to open this summer. Looks like that will happen, at least to some extent.

this station is at the famous "pea soup" place.
it looks to be about 54 miles south of the dual chademo location at West Valley Mall on naglee road so thats a good distance for getting into/out of the bay area. (a little out of the way if going north/south on I-5 but not terrible)

Andersen's is also 92 miles from the Raley's in Galt on CA-99 that has a NRG station with a pair of ABB chargers. That is probably the most reliable fast charge location between Sacramento and Manteca and probably reachable from anywhere in the greater Sac area.

It's interesting that both of the chargers also mentioned in this post are the ones in Galt and at West Valley Mall in Tracy. When my wife last took the RAV4 EV to El Dorado Hills from San Luis Obispo she had to go through the Bay Area since there aren't many chargers along I-5. She used both of those chargers in Galt and Tracy. With the installation of the charger in Santa Nella, the route through the Bay Area from SLO can now be avoided. After charging in Salinas, it would would be easy to drive over 152/Pacheco Pass to Santa Nella on I-5. After charging in Santa Nella, the next hop would be to Galt and then on to Sacramento/El Dorado Hills. There would have to be L3 charger in Kettleman City on I-5 in order to drive from SLO to Sacramento via Hwy 46/Hwy41.

They just need to put a L3 charger along 101 in King City now.

The other chargers from the 2014 CEC grant will likely skip over Kettleman City, but install one on either side in Coalinga (Harris Ranch) and Lost Hills. There were new grants issued this year that will fill in more sites on I-5 but I don't recall off the top of my head which entity got the I-5 corridor from Stockton to Wheeler Ridge in the 2016 Proposed Award. Also, the map below seems to show the 2014 I-5 sites, not new sites for the 2016 grant.

There will be 8 sites installed by Recargo on 101 between San Jose and Buellton. From the map below, it looks like they will be Gonzales, Soledad, King City, Paso Robles, the north side of San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria. Including Buellton I only see 7 red markers, but some of the docs clearly said 8 sites.

With no fast charger in Kettleman City, it would be easier to charge up in Paso Robles to make it to Harris Ranch (76 miles) because the existing charger at Marigold Center, SLO is 104-108 miles from Harris Ranch depending on which way you go.

So it appears that the best route up to Sacramento will still be up 101 to 152 and over to 5. It looks like there will be a L3 charger up in Paso Robles in the future at which point it may then be possible to head over to I-5 and charge at the L3 charger at Harris Ranch. A L3 charger in Kettleman City would have been better since it's a pretty major stop especially for people heading north on I-5 or to Fresno. The one I am hoping for first is King City as I drive that route more often.

By the way a quick review of the specifications sheet shows that it is not completely CHAdeMO compatible with a 250 to 450 volt range.

CHAdeMO is specifically 50 to 500 V.

Tony, I am confused. Are you saying that the EVRUS 25kW charger at Santa Nella is the same as the SETEC you mention? What is the SETEC model? Your post seems to be missing some lines.

Don't start cheering too early

The bad news is that it is a 25kW charger

The worse news is that it doesn't work

To make things even worse, it requires an RFID card that is different from all of the others that I have in my car. The hotel desk has one you can borrow (until they lose it)

Or you can use their Android app (iPhone version is in the works ), but I've been told that the Android app doesn't work.
